Video Presentation for a Professional Distance Education Conference

  1. Hello Lewie,
First of all, let me say that you have a very effective “presence” in your video. You are a natural in front of the camera and the quality of your narration was superior. I loved the introduction of your topic in the video as you skillfully described the experience of isolation that an online learner can experience. The images that you chose were powerful and added to your narration. As I looked at the rubric, I think that you should definitely earn extra credit for your originality in presenting your topic!

I thought that the Stafford and Lindsey research that you showed was interesting since I personally (and unfortunately) fall outside of the age group (25-34) that they described as reaping the most benefits from distance learning. As you stated, this age group has had a good amount of experience with technology in their lives. I would love to see some research on “later-in-life” learners and what tools and structures work best for them in an online learning setting. I recently saw a video in which the presenter spoke about older learners (50+) feeling more comfortable about participating in face-to-face discussions than younger learners. Older learners tend to be at a point in life that they have less to prove than the younger set. They aren’t worried about impressing anyone or afraid of looking stupid. I thought that was an interesting point. Maybe those younger learners thrive online because they can take more time to reflect upon their answers and they are at a point in life where it is important for them to prove themselves.

  2. Lewis,

Great Job! Your presentation is very thorough and original - you do a phenomenal job of gaining the viewer's attention from the very beginning of your presentation. Your use of pictures and a variety of characteristics students often associate with the isolation of distance learning are very powerful. I also like that you chose to incorporate video footage of yourself in addition to the informational slides to present the key points of your research and presentation.

If you don't mind me asking, what program(s) did you use to create your presentation?

    Awesome job,
    ~Laura

  4. Lewis,

Great job on your presentation! Some of the things that stood out to me are below:

You used graphics appropriate to the slides throughout.

The section on "social presence" was informative, and engaging.

I liked how you used citations and links throughout the presentation, so a person could access the source right on the slide.

I also liked how you incorporated video of you narrating along with the PowerPoint.

I am impressed with how you created a very professional presentation, and included all the information you did in 6:08 minutes! Excellent job!
